Khlong as the channels are designated to serve in the central plain of Thailand as a transport route. Especially in the capital Bangkok, they served for centuries as a way to work, as a floating market and - as a sewage pit. This was also the reason why after 1970, many were filled khlongs to ensure better hygienic conditions to be able to. However, this now leads to an endless traffic jam on the streets of Bangkok and the associated air pollution. Only in the district of Thonburi, there are some major khlongs. Although everyone in the densely populated Thailand Khlong is inhabited, khlongs play only a minor economic role - tourism is seen as the biggest factor. Along the khlongs there are many potteries, lotus and orchid farms, it can be visited with a boat ride. The floating usual in former times, markets hardly exist nowadays, the only major one, in Bangkok, located near Damnoen Saduak floating market is almost exclusively used by tourists.
